Jeremy Smith

sustainable tourism writer and communication strategist

What my clients think...

What my clients think...

“One of the most professional people I have ever worked with. Here at CABI we managed to publish the book in a record turn-around time and this was largely due to Jeremy’s commitment and professionalism.

Jeremy is an excellent communicator and works very well to deadlines. The constraints set by CABI for Jeremy’s book were very strict, particularly relating to word count and presentation of the work; Jeremy delivered on time and was exact in meeting our requirements.

As part of the publication process I have joined Jeremy on some of speaking engagements and can confirm Jeremy presents very well and always engages an audience. He has extensive knowledge on sustainable tourism and is passionate about his work.”

Claire Parfitt, Senior Commissioning Editor, CABI

"Jeremy has been part of the team organising WTM's Responsible Tourism programme and written fortnightly blogs on responsible tourism issues for us for four years. His articles are some of the most read and commented upon blogs on our website, show an in depth understanding of the key issues to do with sustainable tourism and its communication, and are routinely delivered on time and to our requirements.

He also delivers a range of communication services for us during out annual London event, ranging from interviews with responsible tourism award winners, writing daily press releases, and on site social media work. As with his blogs, in all of this work Jeremy displays an expert level of knowledge on sustainable tourism issues, and willingness to collaborate wherever and with whoever necessary."

Paul Nelson, WTM Portfolio Press & PR Manager

"We commissioned Jeremy to perform two tasks for the National Parks in England. Firstly, to help us to develop a communications strategy for the new English National Park Experience Collection, a collection of new bookable experiences we are developing with the private sector to tell the stories of our finest landscapes and their people to new overseas audiences. Jeremy produced a comprehensive guide which exceeded our expectations in providing us with key messages, a set of useful case studies from around the world, and way in which we could tackle communications risks which may develop throughout the project – specifically from targeting international markets.

Secondly, we commissioned Jeremy to present to the National Parks Sustainable Tourism Officers conference. For some time, we have felt we needed to refresh our approach in this area. Jeremy’s presentation covered the hard-hitting realities of the scale of change we need to enable globally, alongside a healthy dose of pragmatism and practical ideas. It has helped us to reconsider our role as National Parks in creating life-changing experiences – which move people to want to care for both our National Parks and our planet.”

Mark Holroyd, Head of Programme, Discover England's National Parks

"In 2017, Jeremy delivered a comprehensive communication audit for Montego Bay – covering all marketing channels while suggesting ways to better market the independent exploration of Jamaica as well as promoting increased spending in the local economy. His research not only helped us improve sustainability communications in Montego Bay, but it also helped further shape our sustainability tone of voice. Jeremy’s research and writing style has true power in inspiring positive change – it was a real pleasure working with him."

Crista Buznea, TUI Sustainability Marketing Manager

In 2017 we commissioned Jeremy to conduct a sustainability communications audit of a range of materials relating to TUI customers visiting Montego Bay. The scope included both recommending how existing materials could be improved, and highlighting opportunities and gaps, to encourage customers to adopt more sustainable behaviours (encouraging them to explore the local area in a way that supports the local community, culture and economy). The report was wide-ranging, frank and practical. It provided us (TUI and the Travel Foundation) with some specific recommendations for changes to the Montego Bay materials, as well as more general principles to abide by regardless of the destination.  Jeremy was an active partner, constructively questioning elements of the initial brief, willing to further explore issues or opportunities as he uncovered them, and responding positively to our feedback.”

Ben Lyman, Head of Communications, The Travel Foundation

“Jeremy’s webinar on communicating sustainability was incredibly useful to our members and partners. This is a really important topic to cut through greenwashing and maximise the positive message hoteliers can share with their guests and employees alike.”

Siobhan O’Neill, Editor, Greenhotelier

“Jeremy demonstrated his expertise in communicating sustainability through the invaluable insights shared with the global hotel sector through contributing to ITP’s Know How Guide and accompanying webinar on Communicating Sustainability to Guests. His practical experience and no-nonsense approach is a breath of fresh air to blow away greenwash and help us talk about what really matters.”

Fran Hughes, Director, International Tourism Partnership

’We gave Jeremy the brief of designing a website and writing the content for our newly converted holiday cottages which was different, attractive and easy to navigate while telling a story about the cottages, the area and ourselves.

The simple fact that our bookings in the first 12 months have been 75% up on target is testament to it doing everything we asked for and more.’’

Andrew Bailey, Owner, Graston Farm

“Jeremy is a recognized writer and communication strategist in the tourism industry and it was due to his commitment, network and experience that PATA reached out to him to assist in the development and drafting of the Tourism Recovery Plan to support the PATA Nepal Chapter and Nepal Tourism Board after the devastating earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, 2015.

Jeremy was the team leader for the media section of the report particularly focussing on Marketing Communications and the use of Social media. As the Team Leader, Jeremy’s contribution to the report, and creation of actions plans to support the recommendations, was very meaningful, as these highlighted and opened the understanding of local industry members to S0cial Media techniques and storytelling that were embraced, carried forward and implemented in practical actions that helped to quickly support the tourism efforts.”

Andrew Jones, Immediate Past Chairman, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)

"As the Coordinator of the PATA Nepal Tourism Rapid Recovery Task Force I had the pleasure to work together with him when a team produced within weeks a full set of recommendations for the Nepali Tourism Industry.

Jeremy volunteered as one of the eight team leaders, preparing with the help of Nepali and International contacts a comprehensive set of recommendations related to Recovery Marketing Communication within 10 days.

With the middle- and long-term sustainability of tourism in Nepal in mind, the complete recovery plan has helped considerably, both to support the economic recovery of tourism related organizations and assist the environmental recovery of areas damaged by the earthquake.

The PATA Chairman, CEO and I, as the Coordinator, received tokens of appreciations, both from the Nepal Tourism Board and directly from the hands of Nepal’s President, for the great work the volunteers, like Jeremy, did to help Nepal “bounce back"!

I can recommend him with full confidence of his communication consulting and/or developing sustainability strategies capabilities. The organization which decides to contract his services will profit from the know-how of a prominent tourism expert with considerable experience and, last but not least, a constructive personality!

Dr Bert van Walbeek, Managing Director, The Winning Edge.

"Jeremy was an engaging and dynamic speaker at our biggest and most important event of 2017. He presented fresh and thought-provoking ideas that were a valuable asset to our agenda as a whole. I'd be proud to have him return to speak at any of our future events."

Kelley Louise, Executive Director, Impact Travel Alliance

“We had an honor to have Jeremy Smith as a keynote speaker in the 1st International Tourism Research Conference hosted by JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Jyväskylä, Finland 22-23 Mar 2018. Jeremy Smith´s presentation was to the point, timely, concise, and expertly offered. His excellent presentation dealt with multiple global examples of circular economy. These issues Smith discussed are essential for everyone who is developing tourism services in these days. We can definitely recommend Jeremy for any speaking engagements dealing with the circular economy and opportunities and challenges that it offers.”

Minna Tunkkari-Eskelinen, Principal Lecturer, JAMK University of Applied Sciences

"We invited Jeremy to present to a workshop of sustainable tourism leads for the UK National Parks. His brief was to inspire and provoke us in our roles as leaders in sustainable tourism and he both met and exceeded this brief. A well-structured and prepared presentation, delivered confidently, gave lots of food for thought in how we can build on our work to date to develop truly transformative tourism opportunities in our National Parks."

Dan James, Sustainable Economy Manager, Exmoor National Park
